Video killed the PowerPoint star…or did it? How video works within slides

August 14, 2022

We’ve been moving towards video as the chief method to share information since movies replaced stills, music videos reigned over radio, and TikTok took social media by storm.

Does that mean traditional slide presentations leave you in the past ?

On the contrary, video and your preferred presentation application can work seamlessly together to maximize impact for your presentation or pitch deck.

Here’s how. Add embedded video.

Work on timing and autoplaying.

Be short and sweet.

Be interactive.

Perhaps some great time to utilize video would be…

Remember, there’s a reason people. are there to listen to you instead of staying behind their computer or phone to watch the same content on video. Use this space to curate a memorable experience and give your content a personal touch.

Pitch deck or presentation—which one is it?

August 7, 2022

We’ve had clients use presentation and pitch decks synonymously, but our presentation experts set the record straight to clarify the differences between them.

A presentation is a general term to describe a collection of slides and relevant content (including copy, graphics, photos, and videos) and is typically created in PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides.

A pitch deck is a presentation with a purpose — a set of slides that can be shown on the big screen or sent via email or hyperlink to potential financial stakeholders. It gives the recipient the leisure to review and assess the pitch even before booking a meeting to learn more. Also helpful is the ability to forward the pitch deck to other interested parties for evaluation and input. A pitch deck must be able to stand alone without you there to explain or elaborate on the content, thus including in-depth findings, projections, or statistics is encouraged to reach maximum impact and achieve your end goal.

A presentation on the other hand, is what you use when presenting your concept directly. to an audience, whether in-person or virtually. Since you will be there to elaborate on the content, the presentation should be primarily visual to encourage viewers to actively listen for clarifying or supporting information to your on-screen points. When building a presentation, it’s important to consider audience engagement to keep the attention and reach your presentation goal.

So when you’re not sure which term to use to define your slides, consider the context to know which term is applicable. Generally, it is as simple as answering the questions how should these slides ideally be viewed and what is the purpose of this presentation.

This distinction is a key element to establish during the initial meeting with the Presentation Designory, but we are more than happy to help you define the purpose of your slides and send them to you in the best formats for you based on your needs.

Powerpoint, Keynote, or Google Slides—which makes the most sense for you?

August 1, 2022

While you probably have access to all three presentation programs, which makes the most sense to use for your pitch deck?

There are benefits to each…

PowerPoint is an industry leader—a standard for any Microsoft Office user. It works well across Macs, PCs, and tablets and has been around the longest of any presenting program. PowerPoint offers smooth transitions and effects, along with video integration and a robust presenter view with notes and a timer. Saving PowerPoint documents is easy to computers, external storage, or on any cloud services as long as you have access to internet.

A barrier to entry for PowerPoint can be that it does not come as standard on most computers as it is part of the Microsoft Office Suite. If you’re already utilizing Microsoft products across your company, it is an easy choice and widely used. While the program works well, be sure to double-check and allow for time to adjust your presentation when working between Macs, PCs, and tablets so that text or transitions function properly after the transition.

Keynote is a great program but works exclusively for Mac users and like PowerPoint, has historically been saved on external drives for transfer between devices but can now be saved on your cloud platform of choice. If your organization does use Macs across the board, Keynote can offer impressive transitions and animations, much like PowerPoint, but with its own style and flair. Keynote comes standard on Apple devices without any extra cost and shares most of the primary functionality. It’s got some special effects unique to this program that your presentation designer can utilize when putting together your pitch deck.

Last but not least, Google Slides has the least barrier to entry as you only need a free Gmail account to be able to utilize this online presentation software. Google Slides also allows for a seamless transition between computers and remains easily accessible anywhere that you have internet access. Google Slides can also be taken with you on a plane or off the grid as long as you remember to click “Make available offline” under the File menu. Team members can work together on a project easily and avoid multiple versions or drafts that are easy to mix. up when saving hard copies. Google Slides allow for importing of Powerpoint .PPT and .PPTX files, but generally, the functionality is not as seamless as using the native PowerPoint application.

If you have a strong affinity for one program over the other, your presentation designer will be happy to utilize your choice. If you aren’t sure which makes the best sense to use, we are also happy to make a recommendation based on your unique situation.
